This collection includes vintage statuary of La Madonna, the Virgin Mary & Mother of God. La Madonna is an important figure in a wide variety of religious traditions and especially potent in Italian folk magic and witchcraft traditions such as Stregheria, Benedicaria, and Segnatura. Whether or not you work within a Christian cosmology, La Madonna may be a figure that would fit well into your practice. There are many faces of La Madonna such as Our Lady of Peace, Our Lady of Sorrows, and many more. In Italian folk magic tradition, there is often an idea that the face of La Madonna that calls to you embodies the version of Motherhood you need the most. Many goddesses across various traditions step into the role of Mother and each express their own unique version of Motherhood. These statues are perfectly suited to embody the form of Motherhood you most need, whether you find that in the Virgin Mary or another Sacred Mother.
- Black Madonna Our Lady of Guadalupe: This hanging clay depiction of Our Lady of Guadalupe was found second-hand, having been discarded at a thrift store. It's clearly handmade with love by its original owner, with unique touches like holes embedded into the nostrils to allow the figures to 'breathe.' It's made with black clay, calling in a long history of Black Madonnas from across the globe and depicts La Madonna in the traditional imagery of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Your local tricksters have highlighted the figure with rays of gold and added a hanging attachment of gold-tone stainless steel figaro chain. It measures 12 x 6 inches with an addition 1.5in drop in the hanging attachment.
- La Madonna delle Rose (The Madonna of the Roses): A ceramic bust of La Madonna with her head bowed in prayer. She wears soft powder blue and a white veil covers her head, held in place by a crown of roses that matches the rose cupped in her hands. Her eyes are shut and her expression is gentle. This statue measures 4.5 x 3.25 x 2.5 inches.
- La Madonna dei Benedizioni (The Madonna of the Blessings): A ceramic statue of La Madonna kneeling with one hand outstretched in blessing and the other over her heart, demonstrating the earnestness of her goodwill. A white veil covers her head as she looks out at the person she's blessing. She wears a simple white/brown dress with a blue cloak, both of which curl elegantly around her knees and back like the waves of the ocean. This statue measures 5.25 x 4.25 x 2.5 inches.
- Lourdes Candle: This white votive candle features a trim at the top and bottom that looks either gold or silver, shimmering differently depending on the lighting like the water of the Lourdes Grotto. In the center, inlaid in a grotto-like divot, is a small depiction of the Grotto at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. Here, La Madonna is said to have been seen when the spring housed in the grotto was found. In silver/gold against a blue background, calling in the water of the spring, a statue of La Madonna is seen with a kneeling woman in front of her. This likely depicts when Bernadette, who discovered the spring, first saw La Madonna there. Work with this candle to approach La Madonna like Bernadette, making a small pilgrimage to the sight from your own home through this candle. It is still in its original plastic wrapping, though we are unable to confirm if this candle design is originally produced in the French Lourdes Sanctuary or by worshippers elsewhere. It measures approximately 4 x 1.5 inches. Please do not leave candles burning unattended.
As animists, we find second-hand items have a unique potency when used in altar-crafting. These items, once cherished by their original owners, have since been given up for one reason or another. They long to be loved once more and nearly sing with joy when they're honored by being included in an altar or place of worship. May they find a loving home in your care!
