This folding altar honors Persephone, Queen of the Underworld. It is embroidered with love by hand, with additional handmade elements sewn inside to further call in Persephone. The outside features a wreath with a pomegranate framed by wheat, with a silver pomegranate closure. When unfolded, the altar takes the shape of a pomegranate itself. At the top, Persephone is depicted with an Underworld Crown. Radiating red forms the base of her crown, completed with 6 pomegranate seeds and 1 bronze skull in statuary bronze, all made by hand. 6 pomegranate seeds were chosen as it is often 6 seeds Persephone eats before she is recovered from the Underworld, ensuring she must return each year. Over her gown, the Virgo constellation has been embroidered, calling in her aspect as Kore, the Maiden. This association is further echoed with stars of the constellation highlighted with golden floral beads.
Beneath this embroidered depiction is a statuette of Persephone, nestled inside the same red Grecian border that encircles the entire altar. This depiction was carved by hand by your local tricksters and cast in bonded charcoal, with elements highlighted in hand painted red and gold. Around this depiction are poppies, the sacred flower of Persephone's mother Demeter. On either side of this statuette, wheat sprouts, embodying the return of life to the Earth when Persephone returns each year.
This altar can be folded down to be brought with you throughout your day in a purse or deep pocket. It can also be displayed on a wall by hanging it from the closure loop on a thumbtack or nail.
It measures 5 x 2.5 x 1.5 in when folded and 8.5 x 8.5 in when opened.
