Bird Bacchanalia - Vintage Dionysos Altar Box/Travel Altar
This Dionysus altar box is perfectly sized for a travel altar and is housed in a vintage wooden box that is both carved and painted to show a Bacchanalia of wild animals. The carved motif features birds, rabbits, and flowers and is painted with bright colors that help the pattern stand out in stark relief from the black background. Inside the lid of the box is an illustration handcrafted by the Trickster’s Apothecary depicting Dionysos, as seen in our Illustrated Dionysos Prayer Card.
This altar box is filled with handmade offerings from our Dionysus altar collection, including:
- 1 Dionysus altar tile in antique gold, inspired by ancient Roman intaglios of Dionysus
- 1 green snake altar tile, as the snake is one of Dionysus’s sacred animals
- 2 snake ribs bound with green thread, to honor the spirit of the snake itself as one of Dionysus’s sacred animals
- 1 Maenad altar tile in pearlescent clay, highlighted in shining gold
- 1 red clay amphora, a wine-red altar tile of a Greek wine jug, representing the wine Dionysus’ presides over
- 1 leopard altar tile in gold clay and highlighted in black, calling in the leopard as one of Dionysos’a sacred animals
- 1 Amanita muscaria figurine, as this mushroom is associated with Dionysus and for his tie with ecstasy and trance
- 1 set of prayer beads, with 3 amethyst beads reminiscent of grapes, finished at one end with protective thistle for his association with the wilderness, and an ivy leaf and berry at the other end, with a green glass ivy leaf and blue dragon’s vein agate bead for the ivy berry
- 1 piece of raw amethyst, for Dionysus’s link with royalty through purple and the calmness of knowing one’s own nature, uncut and unpolished for the wild nature Dionysus rightly refuses to shed
- 1 pine scented tealight, topped with fennel seed for the stalk of Dionysos’s thyrsus, and finished with a protective thistle charm
- 1 Dionysus prayer card, with a prayer created by the Trickster's Apothecary in devotion to Dionysus printed on handmade paper with real cornflowers inside and a depiction of Dionysus on the front with grapes and leaves in his hair
The box itself is 3.5x2.25x2 inches.
