Dionysus' Offering Cups
The Dionysos' Offering Vessels invites you to connect with the god of travelers, wine-making, fertility and religious ecstasy. He is the lord of ritualistic trances through music, dance and intoxication, allowing his followers to reach transcendence. Wine was used both for medicine and as a means to connect with the divine in ancient times.
A passage of The Anacreontea says "Put vines on it for me [a drinking cup crafted in silver by Hephaistos] with bunches of grapes on them . . . the Satyrs, the Erotes laughing together with handsome Lyaios [Dionysos], Eros and Aphrodite."
Drinking cups and offering bowls for deities were seen in Norse and Grecian/Roman practices. Our statue of Dionysos can be seen with his drinking cup and wine jug (amphora) at his feet. The more modern take can be seen in the drinking flute.
We have several styles available:
- Glass Flute: This glass flute has wavy, scalloped edges at the top and has a silver-tone metal stem. The metal stem attaches to the glass with a metal lattice that forms around the bottom of the flute. The metal cupping the glass depicts a bunch of grapes and grape leaves on a lattice pattern. It measures 1.75 x 1.75 x 7.25 inches.
- Frosted Chalice: This chalice is made of frosted glass with vining grape leaves depicted in green on the side. The cylindrical vessel rests atop a dainty stem. It measures 2.25 x2.25 x 6 inches.
- Italian Folk Art Cup: A ceramic cup painted with a grape motif. This style of painting is often seen in Italian ceramics, similar to piastrelle tiles, limoncello glasses from Deruta, Italy, and broader majolica pottery. It features a bright yellow rim and bunches of grapes on the vine, with grape leaves turning from green to yellow. It measures 2.5 x 2.5 x 3.25 inches.
- German Ceramic Cup: This cup is a ceramic vessel with a grape motif framed by a deep blue background. This German style of ceramics is often seen in steins: a light-colored clay with a raised relief made to stand out against a deep blue background made of cobalt pigment. It measures 2.25 x 2.25 x 3.25 inches.
- Ticino Pitcher: A vintage ceramic pitcher made in Ticino, Italy in 1983. There is a small, handwritten label from the original owner attached to the bottom, and an original sticker from Ticino, with both the city name and flag on it. It has a bunch of grapes framed by vines on one side, and a similar bunch of grapes framed by golden, autumnal grape leaves on the other. Between the grapes, there is a handle on one side and a spout on the other for pouring. This is the larger of the two grape pitchers. It measures 4 x 2.75 x 3 inches.
- Parma Pitcher: This small, vintage ceramic pitcher is made in the same style as the larger vessel discussed above. This one appears to be from Parma, Italy, with the city name painted on the side of the cup between two bunches of grapes. On one side, there is a bunch of grapes on the vine, while the other side shows a bunch of grapes framed by green grape leaves. Between the grapes, there is a handle on one side and a spout on the other; the word 'PARMA' is seen beneath the spout. This is the smaller of the two pitchers. It measures 2.75 x 2 x 2.25 inches.
